Minimum requirements include experience previously playing in a school band, jazz band or concert band. Students will be divided by level of experience.
An audition video will be requested with registration of the course and can include:
- a jazz standard piece, with either a rhythm section or backing track
- an improvise solo (optional)
While beginners are welcome, the instructor may suggest more experience be required for certain students, and joining a future offering may be more beneficial.
Record yourself playing a jazz standard.
You may play along with a backing track if you choose, or simply play unaccompanied. The video should include the playing of the "head" (melody) and 1 chorus of improvisation.
Some of the things we listen for include tone, rhythmic feel, phrasing, jazz vocabulary, technical ability, and overall musicality.
Instructions for how to submit the video will be available at registration.
