Certificate in Cybersecurity

Format: Online, virtual classroom

UWindsor’s Certificate in Cybersecurity covers fundamental topics in cybersecurity and information security. Learners will participate in engaging online classes to understand threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities, the architecture and design of a system, effective implementation of security solutions, incident response and governance, and risk and compliance. Upon completion of the certificate, learners will be able to investigate a network and create a report recommending steps to mitigate threats, attacks and vulnerabilities.

Content of this certificate is mapped with the CompTIA Security + curriculum for those who are interested in pursuing the certification.

Courses are non-credit, and can be taken individually, or complete both Cybersecurity I and II to receive a Certificate in Cybersecurity

Course Description

Cybersecurity I – Introduction to Systems Security is part one of two of the Cybersecurity Certificate. This online course covers fundamental topics in cyber security or information security. Learners will participate in live interactive classes to understand threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities and the architecture and design of a system.

  • Various types of security controls
  • Change management processes and impact to security
  • Appropriate cryptographic solutions

Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations

  • Potential indicators to determine various types of threats, attacks and vulnerabilities
  • Analyze indicators of malicious activity
  • Mitigation techniques used to secure the enterprise
  • Techniques used in penetration testing

Security Architecture

  • Security implications of different architecture models
  • Security concepts in an enterprise environment and cloud computing
  • Data protection strategies
  • Secure application development, deployment, and automation concepts including authentication and authorization design concepts
  • Resilience and recovery in security architecture

Learners will actively participate in online classes and complete a combination of assignments. Learners will be assigned a grade of "complete or incomplete" upon completion.

Dr. Amin Azmoodeh

Dr. Amin Azmoodeh is an accomplished professional with a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Specializing in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Software Development, Dr. Azmoodeh has years of experience teaching and conducting research at various universities and colleges. His work in these fields is marked by a dedication to advancing theoretical and practical knowledge, contributing significantly to the academic and professional communities.

This class is offered through D2L Brightspace and Microsoft Teams. Learners will require access to a computer with high-speed internet access.

All class materials can be accessed through Brightspace. The virtual class will be held in Microsoft Teams.  A link will be provided through email.  In order to access class materials and the virtual classroom you will have to activate your UWinID.

Brightspace works equally well in all modern browsers on PCs and Macs: MS Edge (recommended by IT Services for all apps), Chrome, Firefox and Safari (Mac). On mobile devices, Safari is the only supported browser on Apple iOS and Chrome is the only supported browser on Google Android. Feel free to review the Brightspace system requirements.

 

  • This program is eligible for the OSAP Micro-credential application (OSAPMC).
  • Participants must be registered into the program prior to applying for OSAPMC.
  • Participants are obligated to pay their fees in full, at least 10 days before the class start date
    • If you wish to withdraw from the program, you must email your drop request to our team at continue@uwindsor.ca at least one week before the course start date to receive a full refund (less the $25.00 administrative fee)
  • Register for this program accordingly to allow ample time for your application to be processed. It takes approximately 10-15 business days for the OSAPMC application to be processed.

Class Materials

Prerequisites: In order to ensure you are academically prepared, it is expected that you have:

  1. Successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalency
  2. Successfully completed one grade 12 math or equivalency
  3. English Language Proficiency
  4. Basic computer skills or course completion in fundamental computer applications such as Word

Note: Individuals who wish to take Cybersecurity II must have a prerequisite of Cybersecurity I.

Proof of completion may be requested for any of the above.
